The Global Carbon Economy

The Global Carbon Economy

Gambling with the highest of stakes

What if the ‘climate change is caused by mans intervention in the carbon cycle’ scientists are right?

~Versus~

What if the ‘climate change is caused by mans intervention in the carbon cycle’ scientists are wrong?

For the each way bet the safer option of reducing mans self evident pollution of the planet, reducing the reliance on the finite amount of energy being consumed by a rapidly growing population is a good thing.

There are those that would say climate change is normal and the world shall adapt; therefore do nothing. So conversely do nothing, just use the coal and oil resources, dumping waste (of all forms) wherever we can, leaving it for our ‘grandchildren’ to deal with.

Which path do you think politicians everywhere will take?

Economic Crisis

The economic crisis beginning in 2008 continues for many countries today and into the future, could be considered a reason to put off any new tax. This is not so. The new carbon economy, driven by climate change, is seen as a good growth route out of the crisis as it requires all new thinking, new industries, creating new jobs… For this reason there is less likelihood than a certainty of change landing squarely in the lap of industry.

Reaching Every Business, Product and Everyone

A country may choose not to be a part of the global Deal but more than 183 countries are already going down this path. This will place a great deal of political pressure on those countries that are not.

Nothing will be exempt. This is the only way to be fair and balanced. The speed at which a tax will be implemented will mean, for the unprepared, a rapid change probably to prices.

A carbon based tax is in effect a new overhead on businesses. Some of this new 'cost' can be attributed directly to the production of the product but then there will remain the additional burden on what are already overhead functions.

Where there is price sensitivity to a product there would be an impact on margin. In the first year of implementation this will almost certainly be the case.

For some it may actually have a positive effect but for the majority it is a new additional cost.

So, What is the Hit?

A new carbon based economy will cause a need for a complete rethink on pricing policies, estimating, quoting... as the cost of doing 'work' is going to rise quicker than CO2 into the atmosphere.

It touches everything we touch and some things we don't.   It will introduce a new overhead into businesses all around the world.   Every product made, used or wasted will have a carbon cost to it.

Sticks and Carrots

An economy such as this will need to be fair.  Additional cost only for those emitting the bad gas and balanced so that for those harvesting CO2 there will be a payout.
